Quilts of Power

For Strength, Health, and Life

As a mode of healing, I’m working on three quilt patterns that hold great significance for me. These designs reflect the trinity of cancer treatments: chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. The designs for these quilts are inspired by Medieval and magical imagery representing healing, alchemy, strength, and resilience.

I have no idea what the future holds for me, but I plan to stick around. Through chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation, I plan to develop and test these three patterns, creating a series of work that will give strength to other patients, either through creating a quilt themselves or being gifted a quilt by a loved one. At least 25% of the proceeds from pattern sales will go to mutual aid for cancer patients forever.

Moving Through it

It has helped me greatly so far to remember that these are healing treatments. They are rough on the mind, body, and spirit, challenging in every way, but they are for healing, and they are also extremely effective. In these quilts of power, chemotherapy is represented by cups overflowing, surgery with swords standing end to end, and radiation via swirly lines that connote a healing light.

I have released one other quilt pattern before, but this series is a new venture, a project that is ultimately founded in the belief that I and others will move through treatment and live long, rewarding, beautiful lives.

Donating 25% of Proceeds, Forever

I want this series to hold greater significance and built-in support for other people going through cancer. The main goal is to raise awareness about young adult cancer and the struggle of cancer generally, while also creating a vehicle to help others.

I’m so excited to develop and release these patterns, and show you that process along the way.

The Quilts of Power Series is supported by a grant from the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation’s Martha Boschen Porter Fund.
